Bob's Space Racers Inc. (BSR) is the world's largest carnival game
manufacturer. They have created such games as the Wac A Mole, Roll a
Ball, and Water Race which can be found in theme parks and carnivals
around the world. In early 1999 BSR approached us about developing a
new digital sound system for their games.
What They Had
At the time BSR had a 4 bit, 8 kHz system, which held 2 minutes of low quality sound. It had no interface for manual operation, and was only capable of playing sounds when a game was in play. The sounds were stored on EPROM chips which made changing them difficult.
What They Asked For
A sound system which had more space and a user interface making it possible for the operator to play certain instructional messages. It was also important for the customer to be able to change the sounds easily.
What They Received
The sound system we developed met and surpassed all of BSR's expectations. We decided to steer away from EPROM chips, and developed an MP3 player which used a SmartMedia card to store the sounds. At the time, this was one of the first MP3 players on the market. Using MP3 and SmartMedia technology made it possible to store 30 minutes of CD quality sound. The use of the SmartMedia card also made changing the sounds or implementing firmware (program) upgrades as simple as using a bank card. The sound unit also has a keypad interface, giving the operator instant access to all 50 sounds.
Even after four years on the market, the BSR Sound Unit is still the industry leader in both sales and features.
