Bob's
Space Racers Inc. (BSR) is the world's largest amusement
game manufacturer. Having worked
with
BSR in the past on the BSR Digital
Sound Unit, we were once again approached about
developing a new product. This time
we were asked to develop an operator/revenue
management system for BSR's games.

The Challenge |
|
|
BSR has always developed good accounting systems for their games. The BSR systems would track the exact amount of money each game generated. However, in certain cases where various operators work the same game in the same day, knowing the game's total is not enough. If a game was missing revenue, and 10 people worked the game that day, who took the money? You could collect revenue after each operator leaves a game, however, this is very time consuming in an industry where every second counts. We were asked to develop a system that would track the operator as opposed to the game.

The
Solution |

Since Bright Ideas always stays on top of developing technologies, we knew of the iButton made by Dallas Semiconductor. An iButton is a durable memory device resembling a large watch battery. Each iButton has a unique serial number programmed into its memory. Each operator uses their unique iButton to activate a game unit. Every unit the operator activates is stored into the iButtons memory. At the end of the operator's shift the iButton's totals are printed out and compared against the operator's actual totals. The printout would show the times the operator worked, the games the operator worked, and the total money generated.
The iButton system developed by Bright Ideas is now used in various theme parks around the world. It is a valued tool in the fight against theft, and the parks who have adopted the system swear by it.
